The National Education and Life-skills (NELS) programme is an integral component of Gyalsung training, designed to nurture loyal, disciplined, capable, and proud Bhutanese citizens. It strengthens Bhutanese values, character, and national identity while equipping cadets with the knowledge, attitudes, and practical life skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world while remaining firmly grounded in Bhutan’s culture, traditions, and aspirations.

Through NELS, cadets gain a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities as citizens and develop a profound appreciation of Bhutan’s history, the sovereign stewardship of the Monarchy, and the enduring principles that safeguard the nation’s independence, peace, unity, and prosperity. By exploring topics such as National Security, Nangchoe, and Driglam Namzhag, cadets cultivate a strong sense of national pride and commitment to serving and protecting the Tsa-Wa-Sum.

The programme also develops essential competencies for everyday life, including leadership, teamwork, digital and media literacy, financial literacy, and effective decision-making. Delivered throughout the training period by expert facilitators from diverse professional fields, NELS complements the physical and military aspects of Gyalsung training by fostering intellectual growth, personal reflection, leadership, and character development. It prepares cadets to become informed, responsible, and future-ready citizens dedicated to the service of the Tsa-Wa-Sum.
